Description

Lucania. Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Distater (Silver, 26 mm, 15.58 g, 6 h). Bearded head of Leukippos to right, wearing a Corinthian helmet ornamented with Nike driving a quadriga to right on the bowl and a hippocamp swimming right at the join between the front visor and the back flap. Behind, ΑΠΗ and forepart of a lion to right. Rev. ΜΕΤΑΠΟΝΤΙΝΩΝ Grain ear with leaf to left; above leaf, club; below leaf, ΑΜΙ. HN III 1574. Johnston B1.2. Kraay & Hirmer 242. SNG ANS 430. Very rare. Nicely toned and of elegant style; with a noble head of Leukippos. Minor flan and metal faults, otherwise, about extremely fine. From the Prospero Collection, New York Sale XXVII, 4 January 2012, 73, acquired no later than the late 1980s.
