Description

Lucania. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 7.65 g, 12 h). Head of Demeter facing to left, her hair bound by a net, wearing a double-curved earring and a simple pearl necklace. Rev. METAΠ Ear of barley with a leaf on the right; to right, above the leaf, ivy-leaf. HN III 1546. Noe 519. With a particularly elegant and noble head of Demeter of splendid late classical style. Corrosion on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine. From the Cinquantenaire Collection, Switzerland, and from the Prospero Collection, New York Sale XXVII, 4 January 2012, 67, acquired from Spink's in London on 22 January, 1988, ex Bank Leu 25, 23 April 1980, 36.
