Description

★ Previously Misattributed to the Seleukid Usurper Achaios ★

KINGS OF CILICIA. Tarkondimotos, king of Eastern Cilicia, circa 39-31 BC. (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.48 g, 1 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ (TAP) Eagle with wings displayed standing facing on wreath, head right. HGC 9, 437 ( Achaios ). RPC I -. SC Ad204 ( Achaios ). Rare - no examples on CoinArchives. Green patina. Minor roughness and deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the Thomas Kirby Collection.

This issue of the Cilician king Tarkondimotos was previously misattributed to the Seleukid usurper Achaios, based on a misreading of the reverse legend. Although it is not visible on this coin, the final part of the legend is a monogram of Tarkondimotos consisting of the Greek letters TAP, but where the A is prominent, the T and P are not and were not recognized until recently.
