Description

Julian II, 360-363. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.44 g, 5 h), Antioch, 5th officina, 361-363. FL CL IVLIA-NVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Julian II to right. Rev. VIRTVS EXERCI-TVS ROMANORVM / ANTE Soldier, helmeted, standing right, head turned to left, holding trophy over his left shoulder and placing his right hand on the head of a crouching captive. Depeyrot 15/2. RIC 202 (as R4). Very rare. Traces of mounting , otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of Dr. W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Dr. Nussbaum in Zürich prior to 1966.
