L. Antestius Gragulus, 136 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.97 g, 5 h), Rome. GRAG Helmeted head of Roma to right; below chin, XVI monogram in ligature ( mark of value). Rev. L · (ANTE)S / ROMA Jupiter in quadriga galloping to right, hurling thunderbolt with his right hand and holding scepter in his left. Babelon (Antestia) 9. Crawford 238/1. RBW 980. Sydenham 451. Attractive iridescent toning. Extremely fine.

This issue of Denarii marks the transition from the previously current mark of value 'X' to 'XVI', indicating that the As had dropped in weight and consequentially the value of the Denarius, expressed in Asses, had to be re-tariffed from ten to sixteen.
