Description

EGYPT. Alexandria. Domitian, 81-96. Drachm (Bronze, 33.60 mm, 21.21 g, 12 h), year ΙΔ = 14 = 94-95. [ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙC ΘEΟΥ] ΥΙΟΣ - ΔΟΜΙΤ ΣE[Β ΓEΡΜ] Laureate bust of Domitian to right, wearing aegis. Rev. L ΙΔ Domitian, extending his right hand and holding an eagle-tipped scepter in his left, standing right in a biga of centaurs to right; both centaurs hold figures of Nike, but the nearer turns back to present his to the emperor. Dattari (Savio) 453. Geissen 406. K&G 24.223. RPC II 2704. Rare. With a good portrait of Domitian and a most unusual reverse. Dark patina with some coppery show-through. Crudely struck on a rough flan, otherwise, about very fine.
