Description

CRETE. Rhaukos. Circa 300-270 BC. Stater (Silver, 24 mm, 10.85 g, 2 h). Poseidon, nude, standing right, holding trident in his right hand and holding the reins of a horse, standing right behind him, with his left; on the lower right, obscuring the horse's fore hooves, rock or a curious die break. Rev. PAY - KION Ornamental trident head. BMC 3. Le Rider p. 29, 168-169 and pl. VI, 9-10 . Svoronos, Numismatique 9 and pl. XXIX, 14. Toned. Some roughness and areas of flat striking, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of a Nobleman who died in 1940, originally acquired from Spink in London in 1939 (with original collector's ticket).
