Description

SICILY. Syracuse . Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.38 g, 2 h). Charioteer guiding quadriga walking slowly to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟ-Ν Head of the nymph Arethusa to right, wearing a pearl diadem and a pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming to right. Boehringer 109 (V50/R75). Toned. Minor uncleaned deposits on obverse , otherwise, about very fine.
From the collection of W.F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired prior to 1975 from Hess in Luzern.
