Description

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 500-490 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 17.24 g, 2 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet, a simple necklace and a circular earring. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl with closed wings standing right, head facing; behind, in the middle of the field, olive sprig; all within incuse square. Asyut Group IVa. HGC 4, 1590. Seltman Group Gi, uncertain dies, but cf. A123-A130, and P139-P149. Cf. Svoronos pl. IV, 33 and 35. A splendid example, beautifully toned and, while struck on the usual tight flan, it is so well-centered that there is a remarkably complete head of Athena, including a virtually full helmet crest, and an equally complete owl. Some porosity and minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of a Nobleman who died in 1940.

Exceptionally well-centered Athenian 'Owl'
