Description

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.16 g, 10 h), struck under Philip III Arrhidaios, Amphipolis, circa 320-317. Head of youthful Herakles in lion's skin headdress to right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on backless throne, holding eagle on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, vertical thunderbolt; below throne, Π•. Ehrhardt, Amphipolis 10. HGC 991 (Kassander). Price 138. Troxell L9. A very rare variety - unillustrated in Price - and with only two examples known to Troxell. Struck in high relief, of very good style, and nicely toned. Extremely fine.
