Description

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 17.14 g, 11 h), uncertain mint, perhaps in northwestern Asia Minor, probably of early posthumous date, perhaps in the 270s. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right, with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left on throne; behind, transverse spear; in the inner left field, monogram of ΜΑ or MAH; in the exergue, monogram of ΜΕ. Cf. Müller 532. Thompson -. Struck from the same obverse die as a tetradrachm of Lysimachos that appeared as Roma E-sale 80, (2021), 297, identified as being a lifetime issue from an uncertain mint. It has a similar monogram in the inner left field and a reversed ΜΕ monogram in the exergue. Very probably unpublished. With an extraordinary portrait-like head of Alexander in a rather strong, elongated style. Extremely fine.

Extraordinary depiction of Alexander the Great
