Description

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Q. Braetius Sura, Proquaestor, 89-87 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 31.5 mm, 15.75 g, 11 h), overstruck, possibly on an Athenian New Style tetradrachm, but more likely on an earlier issue of Thasos. Head of youthful Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΘAΣIΩN Herakles standing left, nude but for lion's skin over his shoulder and left arm, resting right hand on club; in the inner left field, monogram of SVR ( the VR in ligature ). Cf. HGC 360 & Le Rider 52, both with a Q above SVR on the reverse. Struck from the same obverse die as Gorny & Mosch 269, 2020, 207, but there with the usual Q above the monogram on the reverse - that coin was also overstruck on an earlier tetradrachm, very possibly Athenian. A splendid, sharp example. Graffito on the obverse and traces of overstriking, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the D. A. Collection, USA.
