Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Dekadrachm (Silver, 34 mm, 42.12 g, 5 h), unsigned but in the style of Euainetos, circa 390. Charioteer, wearing long chiton, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in his left, driving a racing quadriga to left; above, Nike flying right to crown the charioteer; in the exergue on two steps, a panoply of arms. Rev. [ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ] Head of Kore-Persephone to left, her hair bound in a wreath of reeds, wearing a pearl necklace and a triple pendant earring; behind her neck, scallop shell; around, four dolphins. De Luynes 1246 ( same dies ). De Nanteuil 359 ( same dies ). Gallatin R. XVII/G 1. Well-centered and with an attractive grey patina. Some die rust, a minor die break on the obverse and a punch mark on the reverse (with a corresponding area of flatness on the obverse), otherwise, about extremely fine.
