BITHYNIA, Uncertain. Hadrian, 117-138. Assarion (Bronze, 20 mm, 4.91 g, 1 h). ΑΥΤ Κ [ ] Laureate head of Hadrian to right. Rev. Δ[ΗΜΗΤ]ΡΑ Demeter standing facing, head left, holding a poppy in her right hand and long scepter in her left. RPC 6577 ( this coin ). Extremely rare, if not unique. Well-centered and with a dark patina. A very interesting coin! Very fine.
From an American collection.
The editors of RPC note the comparison with the coins of Trajan from Koinon of Bithynia (RPC III 1137–8) that bear the inscription ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΗ. Additionally, they correctly address the reverse die-link with a coin of Sabina (RPC III 6578/1) that favorably suggests Hadrian but does not discount Trajan as a possibility for the identity of the emperor.
