Description

LYDIA. Tralleis. Circa 166-67 BC. Cistophoric Tetradrachm (Silver, 16 mm, 12.44 g, 11 h), struck under the magistrate Ptol(emaios), year Δ = 4 = 130-129. Cista mystica with half-open lid from which a serpent issues to the left; around, ivy wreath with fruits. Rev. Two snakes coiled around a bow case; above, ΠTOΛ; to left, Δ above TPAΛ; to right, Dionysos standing facing, holding long thyrsos with his right hand and mask of Silenos with the left. GRPC Lydia, S495. Pinder 157. Light toning with iridescent hues around the devices. Good very fine.
