AEOLIS. Myrina. Circa 3rd-2nd century BC. (Bronze, 16 mm, 4.23 g, 12 h). Laureate head of Apollo Gryneios to right. Rev. MY-PI Amphora; in upper right field, kithara. SNG Ashmolean 1454-5. SNG Munich 571-3. Green patina with light earthen highlights. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Münzen & Medaillen (DE) 16 September 1997, 190.

According to Head, Historia Nummorum p. 555, the principal types appearing on the coinage of Myrina refer to Apollo as worshipped at Gryneion (i.e., Apollo Gryneios), although the amphora that appears on the reverse of this coin was the city's civic badge. Gryneion was a town located about 40 stadia (approximately 7.5 km) from Myrina, and had a sanctuary and beautiful temple of white marble to Apollo. There was also a famous grove of aromatic trees, mentioned by Pausanias, as well as an oracle to the god. At the time this coin was struck, the town of Gryneion had become subject to Myrina.
