ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on high-backed throne, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; to left, nude youth walking right, holding a tainia over his head; below throne, ΝΟ. Noe, Sicyon 43. Price 708. A coin of elegant style with an exceptional reverse symbol. About extremely fine.
From a Swiss collection.
The extraordinary symbol of the walking or dancing boy on the reverse has been connected to special rites held in honor of Demetrios Polioketes, who refounded Sikyon under the name Demetrias. The magistrate’s signature, ΝΟ can very definitely be linked to issues from Corinth struck at the same time.
