Description

SICILY, RSMLQRT. Circa 340-320 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23mm, 17.12 g 12), Kephaloidion (?), or a mint moving with the Carthaginian army in Sicily. Charioteer, holding the reins with his left hand and a goad in his right, driving quadriga galloping to right; above, Nike flying left to crown the driver. Rev. Head of Tanit to left, wearing wreath of grain leaves, triple pendant earring and pearl necklace; in front of her face to left, two opposed dolphins; behind neck to right, dolphin swimming downwards. Jenkins, Punic I, p. 65, 39 (O14/R30, this coin cited ). SNG Lloyd 1605 ( same dies ). An attractive, toned coin. Irregular flan, otherwise , about extremely fine.

From a Czech collection, sold by Karel Chaura, Prague (1869-1945) and from the collection of F. S. Benson, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 3 February 1909, 189 (there described as being from Herakleia Minoa and bought by Etienne Bourgey for 2 gns).
