Description

SICILY. Segesta. Circa 455/0-445/0 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20.5 mm, 7.89 g, 6 h). Hunting dog standing alertly to right. Rev. ΣΕΓΕΣΤΑΖΙ8 Diademed head of the nymph Segesta to right, her hair bound up at the back and turned under her diadem; all with a linear circle with the inscription outside. HGC 2, 1128. Hurter 83 (V27/R49). Very rare. Struck from dies engraved by an exceptional engraver, who was a master of provincial Classical style. Some traces of corrosion, otherwise, good very fine.
