Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 280 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 7.50 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrates Philiarchos, Sa... and Aga.... [ΦIΛI-APXOΣ] Youthful nude jockey on horse standing right, holding, with his right hand, a wreath to crown the horse's head and the reins with his left; above, [ΣΑ]. Rev. [TΑΡΑΣ] / AΓA Phalanthos seated astride dolphin to left, holding bunch of grapes in his right hand and resting his left on back of dolphin. HN III 960. Vlasto 673-5. A well centered example. Roughness and light scratches, otherwise, very fine.
