Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 290-281 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 20 mm, 7.98 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrates Phili... and Phi... Nude rider on horse prancing to right, holding round shield and two lances with his left hand and striking downwards with a spear held in his upraised right; below, ΦIΛΙ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos seated astride dolphin to left, holding a dolphin on his outstretched right arm and a spindle over his left shoulder with his left hand; in field to left, ΦI; behind, ivy leaf; below, waves. Fischer-Bossert Group 79, 1093 (V410/R843). HN III 934. Vlasto 592 (same obverse die). Well centered and good strike. Light horn silver around the devices, otherwise, very fine.
