Description

SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Demetrios II Nikator, second reign, 129-126/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27.5 mm, 16.80 g, 1 h), Antioch, 129-128. Diademed head of Demetrios II to right, with full beard; around, fillet border. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ / ΘΕΟΥ - ΝΙΚΑΤΟΡΟΣ Zeus, draped from the waist, seated to left on high-backed throne, holding Nike in his right hand and long scepter with his left; in outer left field, Ξ; below throne, Ο. SC 2166/2c. SMA 320. Attractively toned, with a superb portrait, well-struck on an oval flan. Some striking flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of W. Belser, Zürich, prior to 1965, and that of his son, acquired in the early 1970s.
