Description

CARTHAGE. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Gold, 20 mm, 9.19 g, 4 h). Head of Tanit to left, wearing triple pendant earring, necklace, tied at the back and hung with seven pendants, and a wreath of grain leaves. Rev. Horse standing to left; in field to right, before horse’s fore legs, three pellets arranged as an inverted triangle. Cf. Jenkins & Lewis Group IIId, 22-23 (dies apparently unrecorded, with seven pendants in the necklace, no supplementary dots, and with the grain leaf in Tanit’s hair more upwards than diagonal ). A remarkably attractive and well-struck example, quite truly as the NGSA cataloguer wrote: "une monnaie d’exception. Le plus bel exemplaire connu". Good extremely fine.

Ex Numismatica Genevensis 7, 27 November 2012, 293 ( shown on the front cover ) and Canessa & Luigi de Nicola, Listino Speciale, December 1950, 147
