Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Philistis, wife of Hieron II, 275-215 BC. 16 Litrai (Silver, 26.5 mm, 13.50 g, 7 h), 218/7-214. Diademed and veiled bust of Philistis to left; behind, long torch. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑΣ / ΦΙΛΙΣΤΙΔΟΣ Nike driving quadriga galloping to right; above, crescent with points upwards; to right, KIΣ; below horses, grain ear. SNG ANS 888. SNG Copenhagen 824. Nicely toned. Obverse struck from a worn die but with a wonderfully sharp reverse. Nearly extremely fine.

From the collection of W. Belser, Zürich, prior to 1965, and that of his son, acquired from Bank Leu in the 1960s or early 1970s, with an original ticket bearing the inventory number IA 7015.
