Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 478-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 17.38 g, 3 h), struck under Hieron I, circa 475-470. Male charioteer, wearing a long chiton and holding a goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving a quadriga with horses walking to right; above Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVR-ΑΚΟΣΙ-Ο-Ν Head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound up at the back and falling over her pearl diadem, a pendant earring and a plain necklace; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 350 (V173/R245). Nicely toned and of good style. Obverse very slightly off-center, otherwise, about extremely fine.
