Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20.5 mm, 6.52 g, 4 h), struck under the magistrate Xenokrates. Armored cavalryman, riding horse moving to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram and pileus; below horse, ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡΑ/Τ-ΗΣ. Rev. [Τ]ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and, barely visible to right, a cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 955. Lustrous, fresh and bright. Obverse struck from a slightly worn die, and some minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
