Description

THRACE, Ainos. Circa 412/1-410/09 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22mm, 16.65 g 7). Head of Hermes to right, wearing close-fitting petasos with knob at the top and beads along the edge. Rev. ΑΙΝ - Ι Goat standing to right; to right, kerykeion; all within incuse square. May 263a (this coin). Attractively toned and of very fine style. Good very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, bought from Bank Leu in Zürich, and from the collection of J. Pierpont Morgan (Raymond 172).

The head of Hermes on this coin is remarkably expressive; here we have a god who is not only powerful and thoughtful, but he is kind as well.
