Description

LUCANIA, Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Nomos (Silver, 21mm, 7.49 g 3), under Philistion. Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with a dolphin on the bowl and Φ on the neck guard; to left, monogram. Rev. ΥΕΛΗΤΩΝ Lion walking to right; above, trident to right, between Φ - Ι. HN III 1312. SNG ANS 1387. Williams 507 d (this coin). Nicely toned and well-centered. Some minor marks and die rust, otherwise, good very fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, acquired from Santamaria in Rome in 1961, ex Santamaria 12 October 1949, 225 and Ciani 20 November 1935, 41.
