Description

EASTERN EUROPE, Lower Danube Area. 3rd-2nd century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 16.89 g 9), imitation of a tetradrachm of Philip III from Aradus. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Zeus seated to left on a throne with a back, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; to left, two monograms; below throne, Ζ. CCCBM I 185-186. OTA 479. Beautifully toned and well-struck. Extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, acquired from Münzen und Medaillen in Basel, from the Frey auction of September 1954 in Freiburg i. B. (at a cost of DM 84).
