Description

Alexius I Comnenus, 1081-1118. Histamenon (Electrum, 30 mm, 4.10 g, 6 h), first coinage, Constantinople, 1082-1087. IC XC Christ, nimbate with pellet in each arm, wearing tunic and colobium, seated facing on a throne with a back, raising his right hand in benediction and holding Book of Gospels in his left. Rev. +AΛEΞIΩ ΔEC-ΠOT' TΩ KM Half-length bust of Alexius facing, wearing loros, jewelled chlamys, and crown with pendilia, holding star topped scepter in his right hand and globus cruciger in his left. DOC 2a. SB 1893. Lustrous and attractive. Nearly extremely fine.
