Eastern Mediterranean/Aegean Area. Circa 6th-7th century. Weight of 1-libra (Brass, once inlaid with silver, 59 x 16 mm, 321.00 g), a thick discoid commercial weight with two grooves on the edge (as MAH A 21), a flat recessed bottom with centering hole and a raised rim, and a flat recessed top with a raised rim and a centering hole. Within an inner herringbone pattern border with a pellet in a circle at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°, and an outer wreath of berries, a Latin cross on a simple base between the letters ?? Α. Rev. Plain; in the field, small, incised X. Cf. MAH 2 and Nomos 13, 2016, 352-353. A large, solid, impressive weight with a brown patina, but with no traces of any silver inlay, which was possibly never applied. Extremely fine.
