Description

Valens, 364-378. Multiple of 2 Miliaresia or 4 Siliquae (Silver, 35 mm, 12.94 g, 6 h), Antioch, 369. D N VALENS - PER F AVG Rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valens to right. Rev. VOT / X / MVLT / XX in four lines within elaborate laurel wreath; below, ?AN?. Unpublished and unknown: Cohen -. Gnecchi -. RIC -. Apparently unique. An impressive and significant coin. Traces of corrosion, some scratches and porosity, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a collection in Switzerland. This coin almost certainly must be associated with the extraordinary medallion of Valens' older brother Valentinian, of the weight of 24 Miliaresia/48 Siliquae (104.3 g), that appeared as lot 1931 in Goldberg Auction 53 of 2009. Minted in Antioch on the occasion of Valentinian's quinquenalia in 369, that piece would have been accompanied by others in honor of his brother (like this one, for example), who was, obviously, associated in the celebrations.
