Euboia
Chalkis. Circa 338-308 BC. Obol (Silver, 8.5 mm, 0.62 g, 3 h). Head of the nymph Chalkis to right. Rev. X-A Eagle standing to right. BCD 133. Picard Emission 6,1a = SNG Copenhagen 442 (same dies). Extremely rare, BCD had only a single example, inferior to this one. Of fine late Classical style, very well-engraved and with a noble eagle. Good very fine.
From the Courgette Collection, owned, but unidentified (!), since the 1990s.This coin goes to prove that really rare coins really are rare! BCD had an example of this issue, acquired after decades of search, but of really mediocre quality, with an off-center obverse lacking part of the nymph's nose! What he would have paid for this one had he seen it, would be a figure of dreams.
