Description

Kings of Macedon
Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.45 g, 12 h), struck posthumously, Sinope, c. 230-200. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; outer left, 8-rayed star; below left wing, ΔΙ above ΣI; below right wing, monogram of ΣΕ. Price 1247. Stack's NYINC 2015, 51 (same dies). A particularly interesting late issue. Obverse weakly struck from a worn die, otherwise, extremely fine.
