Description

Macedon
Amphipolis. 365/4 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23x18 mm, 14.44 g, 4 h). Laureate head of Apollo, three-quarter facing to right, with light drapery at neck; in field to right, lioness moving to left. Rev. ΑΜΦ-IΠΟ-ΛΙΤ-ΕΩΝ Raised square frame surrounding a race torch with flames burning to left; all within a shallow incuse square. Dewing 1009 (= Lorber 15c), Du Chastel 192 (= Lorber 15a), Lorber Group F, 15 (O9 / R12). All struck from the same dies. Very rare and with a superb head of Apollo of great power and delicacy. Very attractively toned. Struck on an oblong flan and with the usual minor die break on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, bought privately from Tradart in Brussels in 1998, and almost certainly from the find of c.1965, but unrecorded (cf. Coin Hoards I, 1975, 37 = Le Rider pp. 290-292).
