Description

Thrace
Ainos. Circa 461/0-459/8 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.33 g, 3 h). Head of Hermes to right, wearing petasos with a beaded border and a button top, his hair wound around his head in a plait. Rev. ΑΙΝΙ Goat standing to right; to right, amphora. May, Ainos 31. Rare. With a calm and serene head of Hermes of fine early Classical style; both sides with types in high relief, nicely toned, and struck in very good silver. Very minor striking crack, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Once owned by a European collector, acquired from Tradart, ex Bank Leu 45, 26 May 1988, 82 and Bank Leu 28, 6 May 1981, 57.
