Description

Sicily
Panormos (as Ziz). Circa 400-380 BC. Litra (Silver, 13 mm, 0.70 g, 6 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing an Attic helmet, with crest, a laurel wreath on the bowl and palmettes on the visor, and a necklace of pearls. Rev. ?Y? (in Punic). Swan swimming to right; below, waves. HGC 2, 1045. Jenkins, Punic, pl. 24, 11 var (swan to left). SNG ANS 547 var (swan to left). Of great rarity; almost certainly the finest example known. Sharp and attractive. Minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

Ex Roma, E-Sale 6, 22 February 2014, 26 and The May 2013 Auction, 21 May 2013, 58 (curiously enough, in May this coin had an estimate of £400 and sold for £830; in February it had an estimate of £100 and sold for £1900!).
