Description

Bruttium
Lokroi Epizephyrioi. Circa 350-275 BC. Stater (Silver, 22.5 mm, 8.61 g, 1 h), signed by M.... ΛO Pegasus with straight wings flying to left. Rev. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet and pearl necklace; on neck guard, M; behind helmet bowl, tiny hippocamp swimming to right. Calciati 8. HN III 2338. SNG ANS 505 (same dies, but hippocamp not noticed). Nicely centered and attractively toned. Flan faults from overstriking on both sides, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a collection in Ticino formed prior to 2000.It seems very likely that no one has ever noticed the hippocamp that appears on the reverse of this coin, above Athena's helmet; most known examples are too off-struck to the left for it to be visible.
