Description

Lucania
Velia. Circa 300-280 BC. Nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 7.58 g, 5 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet adorned with a griffin; behind head to left, Α; in lower field to right, Φ. Rev. Υ]ΕΛΗΤΩΝ Lion walking right; above, dolphin swimming to right between Ι - Φ. HN III 1307. Williams 442b (O220/R311, this coin). Beautifully toned, very well-struck in high relief and extremely attractive. Extremely fine.

From a European collection and The Mayflower Collection, Heritage 3019, 26 April 2012, 23016, from the collection of G. J. Bauer, Gans 16, 19 April 1960, 85, ex Naville V, 18 June 1923, 616 (bought by Bauer himself in the room) and, according to a note in J. Hirsch's own copy of the catalogue, from the Garrucci Collection, Hirsch XXVI, 24 May 1910, 306.
