Description

Calabria
Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.64 g, 10 h), struck under the magistrate Aristippos. APICΤIΠΠ[OC] Ephebe, nude but for a wreath on his head, holding filleted palm frond in his right hand and reins in his left, riding horse galloping to right; behind, monogram of AP. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, laureate and nude, riding dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his right hand and resting his left on the back of the dolphin; to right, monogram of MY. HN III 1056. Vlasto 947-9. A lustrous and sharp example. Virtually as struck.
