Tarentum. Circa 380-325 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12.5 mm, 1.27 g, 6 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet adorned with a hippocamp. Rev. Herakles kneeling to right, fighting the Nemean lion. HN III 911. Vlasto 1303-05. A splendid example, toned, very well-centered and of the finest style. Minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.
From a Ticinese collection, formed in the 1990s.The stylistic quality of this coin is simply outstanding! Athena's expression has an intensity that makes her divinity plain, while the reverse design is supremely well-made and fits the circular field perfectly.
