Description

Calabria
Tarentum. Circa 440 - 425 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 7.50 g, 4 h). TAPA-N-TINΩN Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding strigil in his outstretched right hand and resting his left on the dolphin; below, crayfish swimming to left. Rev. TARANTI-N-OΣ (partially retrograde) Taras as Oikistes seated left, holding distaff and staff. Fischer-Bossert 204 (V101/R145). SNG Lloyd 134 (this obverse die). Vlasto 201 (this obverse die). Very rare. Very fine.

From a German collection formed near Starnberg in the late 1990s.
