Description

Northeast Gaul
Treveri. Late 2nd century BC. Quarter Stater (Gold, 14 mm, 1.82 g), "au triskèle" type. Trefoil-shaped triskeles within a dotted circle. Rev. Celticized horse running to right; above, wolf with open jaws running to right; below horse, trefoil-shaped triskeles. De La Tour 8864 (the Eburones). Dembski 318. D & T 110 (Valley of the Rhine). Flesche 251-2. Scheers 22, pl 6, 148 (Treveri?). Very rare (with only 11 examples known) and intriguing. Minor marks, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Swiss collection ex Hauck & Aufhäuser 20, 16 October 2007, 2.The somewhat "crocodilian-looking" wolf (the long legs make the identification sure) on the reverse was a symbol of wild ferociousness, appropriate to the tribes that struck this coin.
