One of the earliest gold coins struck in Makka.
The Abbasid Caliphate. abu’l-Fadl Ja’far al-Mutawakkil ‘ala-Allah AH 232-247 (847-861 CE). AV Dinar AH 234, Makka. Bism Allah duriba hadha’l dinar bi-Makka sanat arba wa thalathin wa mi’atayn (in the name of God this dinar was struck in Makka year four and thirty and two hundred). 4,10g. Album 229.1; Bernardi, Corpus of Arabic Gold Coins, Trieste 2010, 155Ef (2 refs).
Very fine and extremely rare.
From the auction NGSA 8 (24-25 November 2014), 276.
It is not known why the mint name of Makka was found so rarely on Islamic gold and silver coins when the Holy City was of such vital importance to the Islamic faith. At the time these coins were struck, Makka was little more than a town with much greater religious than economic significance, which makes its coinage intrinsically rare. Only three pieces known of this date.
