Description

L. Papius Celsus Denarius circa 45, AR 19mm, 3.44 g. Head of Juno Sospita right. Rev. CEESVS (sic!)·III·VIR Wolf r., placing stick on fire; on r., eagle fanning flames with its wings. In exergue, L·PAPIVS. Babelon Papia 2 var. Sydenham 964 var. Sear Imperators 82 . Crawford 472/1 note.

A very rare legend variety of a scarce type. Toned, flan crack at one o’clock on obverse otherwise, about very fine.

Ex A. Malloy sale XXXV, 1993, 395 and NAC 63, May 2012, 422 and from RBW collection.

Crawford notes this legend variety from a specimen in the Bari Museum, 3082.
