Bound in contemporary quarter red crushed morocco and marbled boards, five raised bands, the second compartment lettered direct in gilt, marbled boards and endpapers. The extremities rubbed and worn with some scuffing, particularly to the edges, the outer joints cracked. Foxed throughout with some blemishes and a few pencil annotations on the first free endpaper, else a handsome copy of this extensive publication compiling all known coins of ancient Italy. Based on the collection of Carelli himself but published only after his death in 1832. Important and scarce.
Francesco Carelli (1758–1832) was a lawyer and then administrative officer of the Kingdom of Naples by trade, at one point working on the excavations of Pompeii and Herculanum. He was also an enthusiastic antiquarian and numismatist, with a particular interest in the coins of ancient Italy and Magna Graecia.
