Description

Croton. Nomos circa 400-325, AR 7.91 g. K – P – O – T – [O] Head of Hera Lakinia facing three-quarters r., wearing pendant necklace and stephane decorated with palmette between two griffins. Rev. Young Heracles seated l. on lion’s skin, holding cup in outstretched r. hand; above, bow and club crossed. Boston 186 (these dies). SNG ANS 379 (these dies). Historia Numorum Italy 2160. Very rare and in unusually fine condition for the issue. Struck on good metal and with a superb old cabinet tone, a reverse composition work of a skilled master engraver. Extremely fine Ex Leu 7, 1973, 37; NFA 20, 1988 617 and Leu 50, 1990, 38 sales.
