Calabria, Tarentum. Nomos circa 344-340, AR 7.86 g. Ephebos, naked but for helmet, carrying long spear and large round shield, standing to front behind bridled horse; in r. field, T set horizontally. Rev. TAPAΣ Naked Taras, holding trident and small round shield seated sideways on dolphin going l. over stylised waves; beneath dolphin, A. Vlasto 518 (this obverse die). Boston 61 (these dies). SNG Fitzwilliam 263 (these dies). Fisher-Bossert 684t (this coin). Historia Numorum Italy 889. Of lovely style and with a light iridescent tone. Minor flan crack on obverse, otherwise about extremely fine Ex Peus 329, 1990, 34; New York XXVII, 2102, Prospero, 25 and New York XXXII, 2014, 76 sales.
