Description

Selinus.   Tetradrachm circa 440, AR 17.32 g. ΣΕΛΙΝΟ – Ν – ΤΙ – ΟΣ retrograde Slow quadriga l. in which stand Apollo and Artemis, respectively shooting arrow and holding reins. Rev. ΣΕΛΙ – N[O – Σ] The river-god Selinos, naked, standing l. holding branch and pouring libation over garlanded altar, in front of which stands cockerel; in r. field, statue of bull standing l. on platform set upon stepped block; above, selinon leaf. Rizzo pl. 31, 7 (this obverse die). Schwabacher 2. SNG Fitzwilliam 1159 (these dies). SNG Lloyd 1219 (this obverse die).
Very rare. A very appealing issue with a lovely old cabinet tone, reverse
slightly off-centre and a die-break at twelve o'clock on obverse,
otherwise about extremely fine
