Greek Coins. Calabria, Tarentum.
Nomos circa 430-425, AR 7.69g. [T]A – PA – N – TI – NW – N Dolphin rider advancing r., extending his l. arm and resting his r. hand on the back of the dolphin; beneath, scallop-shell. Rev. Jockey r., crowning his horse with r. hand and holding the bridle with his l. Vlasto 271 (this coin). SNG Lloyd 149 (this reverse die). Fischer-Bossert 234b (this coin illustrated). Historia Numorum Italy 847.
An extremely rare variety, only three specimens in private hands, of a very rare type.
Lovely old cabinet tone, reverse slightly off-centre, otherwise very fine
